Image of a microarray hybridized with bacterial DNA.  Each spot on the array contains a DNA sequence from unique and functional regions of target genomes.  The bright spots are DNA sequences specific for the target organism, Bacillus anthracis, in this case.  Fluorescence images are digitized and converted into relative fluorescence units for data analysis.  Hybridization intensities of each spot are compared for identical arrays hybridized with DNA from different organisms to identify DNA sequences that are specific for organisms of interest.

The three-dimensional scatter plots depict hybridizations to different microorganisms using the same array design.  The location of each data point in the three dimensional plot is determined by the hybridization intensity from hybridizations with DNA from three different organisms.  The spots that are along the axes are specific for that organism and exhibit a high degree of fluorescence intensity with the target organism, but very low intensity when exposed to fluorescently labeled DNA from other organisms.  These data demonstrate good hybridization results to bacterial DNA as well as RNA viruses.
